Tumblr drawings people11/18/2023 ![]() People *around* them cared, but unless there’s an unspoken part of the story, Magic/Bird haven’t really talked on it (publicly.)Īnyway I’m glad that someone who is informed about this stuff is enjoying what I’m making so far haha it’s really gratifying! So thank you again. Focusing on Magic and Bird’s feelings about each other anyway, and apart from Magic first meeting him, they seemed generally unconcerned about that in terms of their dynamic/relationship. Still gonna hit on people talking about Larry as a white guy and that dividing line bw black and white NBA fans, but might not want to show how nasty some of those fans got. Idk if I can write well enough to tackle it. It doesn’t matter, though, Larry seems generally unconcerned with what people think of him.Īnyway, unfortunately I don’t know how deep I’m going to go into the racial aspect in what I’m drawing, not because I want to ignore it or pretend it’s not there, but there’s a lot of sensitivity that needs to be taken. Larry was a lightning rod for it despite him not wanting to dwell on it, his race was (is) brought up all the time.Īt least he gets accolades from his peers/opponents of the time, I guess. ![]() Especially in the context of outsiders looking at his rivalry with Magic, where making it a question of Black vs White was common. Why do people on Tumblr draw white characters as black or other POC but they never draw a POC as a white person All related (7). It seems weird to say that, like I’m saying “but what about the white guy,” which, let’s be real, sometimes feels like a pointed insertion, but Larry’s story and prevalence is so tied up in the really tense racial backdrop of the time, that the fact that he was white and considered one of the best players of the time is very important and inescapable as part of the conversation. I think my concern with it is largely that people remember Magic very well bc he’s remained an active part of the public eye, but Larry’s contributions and history are largely downplayed or forgotten by a current generation of basketball fans. Haha thank you! It’s a sincerely fascinating story and a super important part of sports and pop culture history.
